Laerskool Voortrekker Eeufees

Laerskool Voortrekker Eeufees was established in 1938 after Laerskool Danie Malan was established. The school formed part of the symbolic ox-wagon trek of 1938. It was part of the festivities to commemorate the Great Trek. People commemorated it by building ox-wagons and then moved with the ox-wagons and cattle from the Eastern Cape. They lived and looked like real pioneers (Voortrekkers). There were different groups just like when the Great Trek happened. The Louis Trichardt group arrived in Pretoria North in December 1938. Each adult and child of the group was asked to bring a hard rock to school at two o’clock that day. A huge cairn (rock monument) was built out of all the rocks. This is a monument of the symbolic ox-wagon move. The rock monument is on the right-hand side of the hall. Inside the monument is a time capsule with a mysterious message that will be opened in December 2039.

The official opening of the school was on 12 October 1939 and the first principal was Mr. E.E. Coetzer. There were only 13 teachers and 427 learners in the school. There is an ox-wagon on the outside wall of the school, this is a symbol of the Great trek ox-wagon group. The opening of the school was broadcasted on radio. It was decided that the name of the school will be Voortrekker Eeufees.

The school cover a whole block and is surrounded by 4 streets, Wonderboom street, Eeufees street, President Steyn street and Burger street. Our school also has its own museum that shows the history of the school. The museum was opened by our previous principal Mr. Swart. There are many items in the museum like paintings, photos, pictures and objects like old telephones and typewriters. All of these items were part of the history of the school. In the museum, you will also find old stationary like old bottles of glue, registers and the school's banking booklets.

Our school turned 80 years old in 2019. We had a huge concert in celebration of our school’s birthday. All the learners participated in the concert. The motto of our school is: "Trap vas en hou vas".
